"I'm sorry, sorry that I lied." Shepard spoke to the darkness of her rubble tomb, it did not reply. She knew that she was probably on a time limit, a small quantity of air to breathe yet she couldn't stop herself wasting it, spouting pointless apologies to ghosts she would soon join.
"What! Do you want more? A final quote from the ever great Commander Shepard, saviour of the bloody galaxy!" Shepard let tears long held back flow freely, her voice choked with emotion as she spoke. "Well I'm not so great a saviour, I didn't save everybody!" She screamed it with enough force to shake the heavens, her fists bunched so tightly her knuckles would show as white, if only there was light to see it.
"What about Kaidan Alenko!" Shepard was alight with pure rage; she wanted to burst from this concrete cocoon, though she knew it was more of a coffin. "What about Richard L. Jenkins!" In her mind she was reciting the names of all the fallen, none were forgotten, just another niche in Shepard's soul. "What about Thane Krios! Or Mordin Solus! Or… or… or…"
Shepard was in hysteria, her sentences breaking up into pieces. "What about Legion!" Each name was like a knife, twisting and turning to the broken symphony of memories, their faces and their last moments. "What about Anderson!"
David Anderson, her mentor, the only father figure that really mattered. Killed in action… was that correct, Shepard's memory was a delirious dream, nothing made sense. The timeline of events was jumbled up, like a deck of cards in one of Vega's poker games…
Though, she thought. What did it matter, she was dead anyway. The last of the Shepard family, no little blue children with Liara; nothing left to say.
Shepard's thoughts finally settled on a pleasant memory, a fake one to make herself feel good, a fantasy of peace. No one is dead; she's at an old wooden farm house, somewhere on the verge of tropical. Sunny and green, this house is her own, this garden is her own. Those little blue children are her children, they play with their uncle Wrex. In the lounge Garrus sits with the rest of the crew drinking and playing poker, Grunt, Jack, Zaeed and Anderson. Talking happily to each-other on the couch, Tali and Legion. Across from them on the other couch are Jenkins and Miranda, Jenkins is failing at all his chat-up lines though Miranda just smiles back not minding at all. Reading in the armchair is Doctor Chakwas, smiling happily and occasionally glancing up at Jenkins to watch his progress with bemusement. Joker is snuggling up to EDI, they both seem happy and content with each other's company. Thane is talking with Kasumi about stealth; they seem to be happy also, enjoying a familiar subject to discuss. Samara is talking with Jacob about something, anything, a happy conversation like all the others, a perfect scene. Mordin is talking to Javik, who seems bored to death or almost nearly, though amused at such peace surrounding him. Vega is chatting up Ashley and Cortez is chatting up Kaidan, all the while Traynor is flirting with Chambers.
Though the cluster of happiness amuses Shepard, one special figure is missing from the scene. Shepard strides through the imaginary house, smiling at imaginary photos on imaginary walls, a fake existence beginning to unravel with the failed presence of someone all too special in her heart.
It crumbles some more, though it stops with a simple call from the balcony "Shepard!" a happy voice, a soft voice, the voice Liara T'Soni the love of Shepard's life. Embracing her lover is the red of a setting sun Shepard disappears.
